Russian Kettlebells first appeard around 1704 as a counter weight used in the market place. It wasn't long before the common folk started throwing them around and when they started seeing results they continued to train with them.

For centuries later, the russian people used them for training themselves, their athletes and their military. It has been reported, after the USSR was disbanded the U.S. Specail Forces and Russain Military would compete against each other in various activities. They soon made an amazing discovery: "We'd be totally exhausted and the Russians wouldn't even be catching their breath....says a secret service agent.....it turns out they all were working with kettlebells".

Kettlebells are used for their total body and ballistic type training. You won't be going to the gym to focus on your lats, or biceps, or your quads, because you will hit all those sites with each exercise. The ballistic part of the exercise is the frequency and speed at which these exercises can be performed. Your typical barbell or dumbbell exercise is designed for focusing on one muscle group and be repeated for a certain amount of sets and reps. Kettlebells are designed to be done in intervals of time to a certain number of reps. So, while you will build the same muscle growth you would with the other exercises you also will increase the amount of calories you will burn during the execise.
